Alert Google Alerts
I created this Google Alerts folder in Microsoft Outlook a couple of weeks ago with the intention of establishing a content database of blogging ideas to draw from as needed. Google is a treasure-trove of Internet resources every blogger should learn to wrap their arms around.
As Google Alerts are new to me I wasn’t quite sure exactly what I could do with them. On another blog I am running called “Boating Today” I recently posted a short article generated from a Google Alert. The alert directed me to a news article on a blog which sent me scurrying all over the Internet in search of information on the Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac Island.
This was fun. By the time I posted this short article on my bIog I was genuinely interested in my new subject matter. Breaking King Content’s 5th commandment I have not followed up on that post but it is waiting there patiently for my next installment.
The entire subject of content production intrigues me. I believe there are endless topics to write about I don’t have got a clue exist that would naturally draw me inside their web of interest. Here are three keys to unlocking the front door to get inside an unlimited and original supply of blogging content:
- Content Adrenaline: The initial push away from the shore of content oblivion many times requires just a tiny shot of content adrenaline. This is where Google Alerts do their job. Organized properly Google Alerts provide an endless stream of incoming content-stimulators on an a range of subject matter limited only by your imagination.
- Content Research: A quick overview of your Google Alert will generate a list of content questions requiring more in-depth study. It is at this stage of topic exploration where interest starts to grow in your new subject matter . As facts are gathered and organized you have the opportunity to become a mini-authority and design a unique angled content lens through which your readership can view your blog post. I was mildly surprised how mediocre the original Google Alert article was. Once I began to research the Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac Island it became clear there was a bevy of information for me to peruse and all I needed was…
- Time: This tiny post took at least an hour from reading the Google Alert to clicking the “publish” button inside my Wordpress dashboard. Experience should shorten my content publication cycle but time is an essential blogging commodity as valuable as adrenaline or research and needs to be accounted for up front. As the clock was ticking I was all to aware of other tasks waiting my attention. My short investment of blogging time needed to be counted and paid up front for any future content to have appeared on my blog.
Need a shot of content adrenaline? Scan your blog posts for a few words that catch your attention and let Google Alerts do the rest.
