On The Affiliate Brink
There was a happy ending to this poor guy’s dilemma in what is one of the most incredible videos I’ve ever witnessed. Suicide aside, with the recent cuts in their affiliate force by the eBay Partner Network, BANS users must feel like at any minute they could be swept over the affiliate-brink. Especially if a good chunk of their income is dependent on EPN. I realize PepperJam is a fall back position for BANS users, but it still looks precarious at best and not an affiliate-ledge I’d like to be perched for any length of time waiting to be rescued.
The EPN affiliate cuts are leading me to re-think how to approach earning money with the Build a Niche Store script. Most of the income I earn comes directly from sales on eBay not Affiliate Marketing. Affiliate Marketing is a skill I am slooooowwwwwly learning when I have extra time. If I am going to invest my precious time into Affiliate Marketing, I want to make darn sure that time is invested into as stable a business plan as possible.
With that in mind here are a few tidbits of practical Affiliate Marketing common sense from someone who makes next to “zilch” in this tumultuous occupation.
Use Wordpress on the root domain - I created several BANS sites on the root domain and stuck my Wordpress blog in the folder after the domain. Not “gunna” do that anymore. In fact, I’m 75% sure I will be “chuckin” the hole “kit-n-kaboodle” of my BANS sites that are on the root domain and redo these domains with Wordpress on the root domain.
Go slow - There are just to many “get-rich-quick” pitches out there newbies like me can fall for when we don’t know all the ins and outs. The tortoise and the hare story really appeals to me when it comes to Affiliate Marketing. I want to learn a skill, not strike it rich. This takes time, lots of time. It also takes an ability recognize, early on, who to follow. Like any industry where money is involved, no one is white as the driven snow when it comes to cutting corners. But if you can find some trail-blazers that seem to have a “servants-heart” hold onto them tight.
Get an education - Invest first in “structured” knowledge not Affiliate Marketing tools. This is key for me. No one can take away knowledge. Assimilating Internet Marketing knowledge by bouncing from blog to blog is like sending your kids to school without a curriculum. It’s more difficult to invest in knowledge than slick new Affiliate Tools that promise the world on a string. But without the knowledge tools are useless.
Create a General Affiliate Marketing Plan - I must admit this is the stage where I am. My broad plan right now is to forget about making money. Install Wordpress on the root of the 15 or so domains I own and start creating content for them. Some of the domains I’m not sure I’ll even waste my time with. The reasons for purchasing them were not strong enough.
Affiliate Marketing is a fluid business. The time spent to discover and promote products is not easy. There is no shame in admitting you are at Affiliate Ground Zero. It certainly beats acting in haste and ending up locked on a ledge waiting for someone to rescue you.
